  • Jeremy McWilliams on the 2-stroke Proton KR qualifies on pole at the age of 38, the oldest rider on pole in the premier-class since Jack Findlay in 1974
  • Garry McCoy (Yamaha YZR500) qualified in second place on the grid, McWIlliams team mate Nobuatsu Aoki in third and Jurgen vd Goorbergh in fourth, this is the first all two-stroke front row of 2002
  • Valentino Rossi wins for the 11th time in 2002; the 50th career GP win
  • First four riders across the line all riding V5 Honda
  • First 2-stroke rider across the line – Jurgen vd Goorbergh in 5th
